International Asian Studies Programme
In keeping with the University’s distinctive educational mission of promoting cultural exchange between East and West, an International Asian Studies Programme (IASP) was launched at the University in 1977 with the support of the Yale-China Association. This Programme is open to students from institutions outside Hong Kong who wish to take advantage of the University’s academic resources and research facilities to develop knowledge in Chinese, Asian and International Studies, further studies in their academic discipline in the context of Hong Kong, mainland China and the region, and learn Chinese.
The IASP is fully integrated into the regular structure of the University. Enrolment in the IASP enables participants to take regular courses with the University’s undergraduate and postgraduate students offered by the Faculties of Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Law, Science and Social Science, and other CUHK academic units. Participants may also take special language courses in Cantonese and Putonghua offered by the Yale-China Chinese Language Centre. Many opportunities are provided to participants to experience Chinese culture. They include sharing a dormitory with the University’s full-time undergraduate students, thematic field trips, excursions, and language tables, just to name a few.
There are two categories of participants: (1) associate undergraduate students normally taking a full load (9–18 units per term) of courses; and (2) associate postgraduate students normally either (a) taking a full load (9–18 units per term) of courses or (b) conducting research and taking a minimum course load of 3 units per term.
Students may participate in the IASP for one term or for one academic year. Previous coursework on Chinese language or Asian studies is not required for admission, but undergraduate applicants must have normally completed at least two terms of university study; postgraduate applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution of higher learning or are currently enrolled in a postgraduate programme at another institution.
Participants may come as exchange students or study abroad (fee-paying) students. Exchange students are those who are nominated by institutions which have formal exchange agreements with the University. Exchange students are exempted from paying tuition to CUHK. Study abroad students are those who come from institutions which do not have formal exchange agreements with the University. Study abroad students must pay the IASP tuition. Both exchange and study abroad students enrol in the IASP for their study period at CUHK. They are responsible for housing and other exchange related fees.
