(a)

General Education Foundation (GE Foundation) Programme

6

The GE Foundation Programme aims to provide all undergraduate students with a common learning experience and foundation for university learning. It consists of two compulsory courses:

·

UGFH1000 In Dialogue with Humanity or UGFH1001 In Dialogue with Humanity (Cross-institutional)

·

UGFN1000 In Dialogue with Nature or UGFN1001 In Dialogue with Nature (Cross-institutional)

All students (including LLB and MBChB students) are required to complete these two courses which engage students in dialogues on perennial concerns of human existence through the reading of classics. Taught in seminar style, they are designed to help students cultivate knowledge, attitudes and skills that are essential for independent learning.

(b)

The Four Areas

9

(i)      All students (except LLB and MBChB students) should complete at least one course (2-3 units) from each of the following Four Areas of University GE:

Area A (UGEA) Chinese Cultural Heritage

This area introduces students to the essential characteristics of Chinese culture. By way of an integrated approach, students will learn to appreciate and evaluate the Chinese cultural heritage and its relevance in modern life from a broad intellectual perspective.

Area B (UGEB) Nature, Science and Technology

This area broadens students’ perspectives on nature, science and technology. It introduces students to various principles, discoveries and methods of science. Students will learn to appraise with a scientific attitude and to evaluate human’s role in being part of nature and the impact of science and technology on modern life.

Area C (UGEC) Society and Culture

This area enhances students’ understanding of the ways in which human societies are constituted and human cultures are represented, in their generality as well as diversity. Students are introduced to the theories and/or methodologies through which social, political, economic or cultural issues are studied.

Area D (UGED) Self and Humanity

This area enables students to explore the diversity of human values, reflect on the meaning of human endeavors, and gain a better understanding of themselves.

(ii)   LLB students:

LLB students who neither register on a Double Degree stream nor on a path to a Minor will be directed by the Faculty of Law to take 6 units of courses in the Four Areas of University GE as partial fulfilment of the 13-unit non-law electives. Students are strongly recommended to take, as part of those 6 units, one course in Area A (UGEA).

(iii) MBChB students:

MBChB students are required to take 3 units in Area A (UGEA) and designated courses in bioethics as alternatives to fulfilling 6 units of University GE under Areas B, C and D.

Designated courses in bioethics include MEDU1140 (Term 2 of this one-year course; recognized as 1 unit), MEDU2140 (recognized as 1 unit), MEDU3700 (recognized as 1 unit), MEDU3800 (recognized as 1 unit), MEDU4300 (recognized as 1 unit) and MEDU4400 (recognized as 1 unit).
